Kansas Barbed Wire Collectors Association Endowment

Goal: $10,000.00

Specific Need

The museum is growing its permanent endowment to provide funds for the long-term operation of the museum. Proceeds from the fund will cover day-to-day operating expenses and educational programming.

Mission

The mission of the Kansas Barbed Wire Collectors Association, Inc. is...

•To maintain and operate a museum which displays to the public old barbed wire and related fencing tools.

•To observe and commemorate the history of barbed wire and its importance in the development of the United States.

•To educate children on the historical connection between the “Louisiana Purchase” and the “homestead laws”, both of which were actually made successful with the use of barbed wire.

•To make the public aware of the hardships the settlers of the Midwest experienced when the Great Plains were settled.

Profile

In 1970, the LaCrosse Chamber of Commerce purchased an old storefront on Main Street and offered the front room for use as a museum dedicated to the history of barbed wire. News of the unique museum spread like wildfire. In May of 1970, Charles Kuralt brought his On the Road crew and filmed a segment in LaCrosse at the yet to be dedicated museum. In May of the following year, the Barbed Wire Museum was officially dedicated. With barbed wire collecting now synonymous with LaCrosse, the small western Kansas community became known as The Barbed Wire Capital of the World™. The museum has since completed two expansions and continues to draw visitors from across the United States and from around the world.
